Ghana Address Format With Examples
Ghana is in West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea. The way people communicate, especially when writing addresses in the mail, varies throughout the country. Ghana didn’t have a formal, enforced national addressing system until 2017. People relied on landmarks, directions, and even names of nearby buildings to describe locations, which works locally but doesn’t translate well into a formal system. In cities like Accra, Kumasi, or Takoradi, you’ll find more formal street names and house numbers, though even those can be inconsistent. But in rural areas or informal settlements, streets often aren’t named, and house numbers might not exist. Moreover, there are different types of addresses, each with a specific element requirement. If you want to send mail to a client or customer in Ghana but don’t know the correct address format, we will help you. We have listed all the different types of addresses, as well as the format and examples for each.
Ghana Address Format Breakdown
Recipient Name
In the first line, start by writing the recipient’s name. If you are sending the mail to a business, the company’s name will come in the first line. Write the person’s name and department in the second and third lines. Add ATTN. in front of the person’s name to ensure the internal mail distribution system sends the mail to the correct office and desk.
Example:
MR. KOJO ATTA
Or
ABC LTD.
ATTN: MR. KOJO ATTA
HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT
Thoroughfare
Write the number and name of the thoroughfare. If the resident has a door number, mention that here. If the recipient uses a P.O. box, write the term “P.O. Box” and then the box number.
Example:
NO. 6 INDEPENDENCE AVENUE
Or
DTD 1234
Or
P.O. BOX 45
Post Office and Digital Address
Write the post office’s name and the digital address number. If you send it to a post office, mention the name and the postcode.
Example:
SAKUMONO GA-243-8164
Or
SAKUMONO GT-342
Region
Write the name of the place where the person lives. Some of the famous regions in Ghana are Kumasi, Tamale, and Sekondi-Takoradi.
Example:
GREATER ACCRA
Country Name
Write the name of the country on the last line. If you send international mail to Ghana, write the name in capital letters.
Example:
GHANA

Special Considerations for Writing a Ghana Address
- Address Line Alignment: All the lines should be left-aligned.
- Address Placement: Write the address on the bottom right-hand corner of the envelope.
- Punctuation: Do not add any separating commas between address elements sharing the same line.
Examples of Different Types of Ghana Address Formats
Residential Address Format
Write the recipient’s name, street address, thoroughfare, post office, digital address, region, and country name. Every address element except the post office and digital address will come in separate lines.

Rural Address Format
Typically, the streets in rural areas of Ghana do not have formal names. Write the village’s name and the nearest larger town, in this case. Add the rest of the address elements in the same way as the residential address.
Example:
MR. KOJO ATTA
VILLAGE OF BONWIRE
NEAR EJISU
GREATER ACCRA

Business Address Format
Instead of the recipient’s name in the residential address, write the company’s name in the first line. Write the person’s name in the second line and add their department in the third line.
Example:
ABC LTD.
ATTN: MR. KOJO ATTA
HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT
NO. 6 INDEPENDENCE AVENUE
SAKUMONO GT-342

International Address Format for NGOs and Organizations
Write the organization’s name in the first line and the specific department in the second line. Place all the other address components, except the recipient’s name, in the same way as the residential address.
Example:
UNICEF GHANA
ATTN: EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
NO. 6 INDEPENDENCE AVENUE
SAKUMONO GT-342
GREATER ACCRA

P.O. Box Address Format
Instead of the street address, write the term “P.O. Box” and then the box number in the residential address.
Example:
MR. KOJO ATTA

SAKUMONO GT-342
GREATER ACCRA
GHANA
Military Address Format
Except for the first two lines, the military address format follows the same structure as the residential address format. In the first line, write the rank and full name of the person. In the second line, write the military unit number.
Example:
CAPTAIN KOJO ATTA
MILITARY UNIT 67
P.O. BOX 43
SAKUMONO GT-342
GREATER ACCRA

Government Office Address Format
Instead of the recipient’s name, write the office and department names in the residential address on the first and second lines, respectively.
Example:

ATTN: DEPARTMENT OF TRADE
NO. 6 INDEPENDENCE AVENUE
SAKUMONO GT-342
GREATER ACCRA

Address Format for Multiple Recipients
If you want to mail to multiple people in the same household or business, write each name on separate lines of the residential and business addresses.
Example (for family) | Example (for businesses) |

ABC LTD.

Address Format for Courier Services
If you send mail using courier services like DHL or FedEx, add the recipient’s contact details in the last line of the residential address. This will help the delivery agent contact them if they find the exact address difficult.
Example:
MRS. AFIA ATTA
MRS. 6 INDEPENDENCE AVENUE
SAKUMONO GT-342
GREATER ACCRA
GHANA
PHONE: +233 30 113 4167

In the second line, write the postcode. The region and country name will come in the third and fourth lines.
Example:
GPO POST OFFICE
ACCRA CENTRAL GA-132
GREATER ACCRA
