Tanzania Format With Examples

Tanzania is situated in East Africa and is renowned for its geographical diversity, rich cultural heritage, and political stability. It is officially called the United Republic of Tanzania, formed in 1964 through the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

The country shares its border with eight other nations: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. This makes it a strategic player in the East African region, both politically and economically.

People within the nation use varying address formats due to historical, infrastructural, cultural, and technological factors. While Tanzania Posts Corporation (TPC) has guidelines for addressing, there is no universally enforced or consistently used national address format. This leads individuals, businesses, and institutions to adapt address structures based on local understanding or convenience.

Additionally, more structured addressing is available in urban centers like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Dodoma, which include street names, house numbers, and postal codes. However, formal street naming and numbering systems are incomplete or nonexistent in rural or peri-urban areas. People in these areas often rely on local landmarks, village names, or ward identifiers rather than formal addresses.

Moreover, there are different types of addresses, each with its specific element requirements. If you need to mail a client or customer in Tanzania but are unsure of the correct address format, we can assist you. We have listed all the different types of addresses, along with their formats and examples.

Tanzania Address Format Breakdown

Recipient Name
In the first line, write the recipient’s full name. If you are sending the mail to a business, the company name will appear in the first line. Write the person’s name and department in the second and third lines. Add ATTN. in front of the person’s name to ensure the internal mail distribution system sends the mail to the correct office and desk.

Example:

FRANK GABRIEL MUSHI

Or

ABC LTD.

ATTN: FRANK GABRIEL MUSHI

HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT

Street Address
In the second line, write the building number and the street name of the residential or business address. If the recipient uses a P.O. box, write “P.O. BOX” followed by the box number.

Example:

21 SAMORA AVENUE

Or
P.O. BOX 67

Postal Code and Ward/District
In the third line, write the five-digit postal code and the district where the recipient’s city is. Some famous districts of Tanzania are Ilala, Ubungo, Chamwino, and Karatu.

Example:

131213 KARATU

City/Town
Write the name of the city where the person lives. Some of the major cities in Tanzania are Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Arusha, and Mwanza.

Example:

Country Name

Write the name of the country in the last line. When sending international mail to Tanzania, write the name in capital letters.

Example:

TANZANIA

Special Considerations for Writing a Tanzanian Address

  • Address Line Alignment: All the lines should be left-aligned.
  • Address Placement: Write the address in the center of the envelope.
  • Punctuation: No commas should exist between the address elements that share the same line.

Our Customers Say It Best

We have been using PostGrid for a few months. It works with our CRM, the software interface, efficiency, automation, and integration with no issues. Their support team is quick with resolution and their web portal is easy to access and transparent in retrieving transactions and analyzing weekly & monthly sending limits.

Chief Technology Officer

This API has turned out to be a great asset. We started off with 4000 mailings for 3 months and never had any downtime. I requested an increase in the sending limits and it was given to me in 10 minutes! I also have used PostGrid to verify our mailing lists. It’s been great to us and customer support is very reliable.

Vice President Of Engineering

We wanted a low-cost, easy-to-understand, and easy-to-use direct mail platform. Finally, PostGrid took all my worries in terms of snail mail. The pricing is very reasonable! There is almost no delay in the SLA’s commitment, and it is exciting to watch automation in action. Easy to build and maintain the mailing lists of our patients. Not to forget, reports can be generated, and a block editor can be used too!

Director Of Operations

We were looking for a solution to outsource and automate our process of mailing welcome letters to our customers. Previously had 2 dedicated people printing the postage label, stamping it manually and stuffing the mail and dropping it off at the postal office. It was very inefficient and could have caused major compliance issues. PostGrid helped us eliminate the entire manual process with their automation and API solution, now sending all mails smoothly.

Director of IT and Operations

Very straightforward, fast, and reliable address standardization API. We collect address data from multiple patients, clinical records, and providers and attempt to combine them into one. Addresses are often redundant or formatted differently in this process, which is our biggest challenge. PostGrid makes it easy for us to solve both of these problems simply by appending PostGrid to our datasets.
