Mozambique Address Format With Examples
Mozambique is a country in southeastern Africa, along the Indian Ocean. Its long and scenic eastern coastline gives it access to vital maritime trade routes and a rich fishing zone. The country’s geographical position makes it strategically significant as a natural bridge between inland southern African countries and the sea.
It shares its borders with Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Eswatini. Its coastline on the Indian Ocean and its land borders place it at a crossroads of regional integration, trade, and cultural exchange in southern and eastern Africa.
People across the country write address formats in different ways. Unlike countries with rigid postal systems, Mozambique does not have a universally applied or strictly enforced national format. As a result, people often rely on local landmarks or informal descriptions to indicate locations. This leads to variations in how addresses are written, depending on what information the writer considers most useful or necessary.
Another primary reason for variation is the difference between urban and rural areas. In cities like Maputo or Beira, addresses often include structured elements such as street names, building numbers, or postal codes. In contrast, rural areas usually lack marked streets or house numbers. People typically describe their location using nearby features, such as “near the school” or “behind the market.”
Moreover, there are different types of addresses, each with its specific element requirements. If you need to mail a client or customer in Mozambique but are unsure of the correct address format, we can assist you. We have listed all the different types of addresses, along with their formats and examples.
Mozambique Address Format Breakdown
Recipient Name
In the first line, write the recipient’s full name. If you are sending the mail to a business, the company name will appear in the first line. Write the person’s name and department in the second and third lines. Add ATTN. in front of the person’s name to ensure the internal mail distribution system sends the mail to the correct office and desk.
Example:
JOSE SANTIAGO
Or
ABC LTD.
ATTN: JOSE SANTIAGO
HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT
Street Address
In the second line, write the street type and the name of the residential or business address. If the recipient uses a P.O. box, write “C.P. (Caixa Postal is Portuguese for P.O. box)” followed by the box number.
Example:
AVENIDA JULIUS NYERERE
Or
C.P. 45
Building Number, Floor, Apartment
In the third line, write the building number, floor, and apartment number where the recipient lives.
Example:
23, 4O ANDAR, FLAT 3
Postal Code and City
Postal codes in Mozambique are four-digit numbers. After this, write the name of the city where the person lives. Some of the major cities in Mozambique are Maputo, Nampula, and Pemba.
Example:
1324 MAPUTO
Province/District
Write the name of the province or the district where the city lies. Some of the districts in Mozambique are Palma, Namuno, Balama, and Govuro.
Example:
PALMA
Country Name
Write the name of the country in the last line. If you send international mail to Mozambique, write the name in capital letters.
Example:
MOZAMBIQUE
Special Considerations for Writing a Mozambique Address
- Address Line Alignment: All the lines should be left-aligned.
- Address Placement: Write the address on the bottom left-hand corner of the envelope.
- Punctuation: Add a comma between the building number, floor, and apartment. But do not add a comma between the postal code and the city.
Examples of Different Types of Mozambique Address Formats
Residential Address Format
Write the recipient’s name, street address, P.O. box number, building number, floor, apartment, postal code, city, province, and country name. Except for the building number, floor, apartment, postal code, and city, every address element will be listed on a separate line.
Example:
JOSE SANTIAGO
AVENIDA JULIUS NYERERE
23, 4O ANDAR, FLAT 3
1324 MAPUTO
PALMA
MOZAMBIQUE
Rural Address Format
Typically, the streets in rural areas of Mozambique do not have a formal name. In this case, write the name of the village or the settlement, followed by the nearest larger town or city. Add the remaining address elements in the same manner as the residential address.
Example:
JOSE SANTIAGO
VILLAGE OF DONDO
NEAR BEIRA
1324 MAPUTO

Example:
ABC LTD.
ATTN: JOSE SANTIAGO
HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT
AVENIDA JULIUS NYERERE
23, 4O ANDAR, FLAT 3

AVENIDA JULIUS NYERERE
23, 4O ANDAR, FLAT 3

Example:

AVENIDA JULIUS NYERERE
C.P. 45
1324 MAPUTO
PALMA
MOZAMBIQUE
Military Address Format
Except for the first two lines, the address format follows the same structure as the residential address format. In the first line, write the rank and full name of the person. In the second line, write the military unit number.
Example:

MILITARY UNIT 67
P.O. BOX 45
1324 MAPUTO
PALMA

Instead of the recipient’s name, write the office and department names in the residential address on the first and second lines.
Example:
MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
ATTN: DEPARTMENT OF EXCHANGE
23, 4O ANDAR, FLAT 3
1324 MAPUTO
PALMA
MOZAMBIQUE
