PostGrid Glossary Carrier Route

Carrier Route

A carrier route is a specific geographic area within a postal delivery system that a mail carrier is responsible for. Identifying the correct carrier route is crucial for optimizing delivery routes and ensuring timely and accurate mail delivery. By utilizing carrier routes, businesses can enhance the efficiency of their mailing operations and improve customer satisfaction through reliable and prompt service.

A postal carrier route consists of a collection of addresses that share the same USPS code, facilitating efficient mail delivery. These codes are nine digits long, including a five-digit ZIP Code, a single letter indicating the carrier route type, and a three-digit carrier route code (e.g., “92019C005” or “84604R009”). Typically, each carrier route corresponds to the area serviced by a specific mail carrier. Accurately identifying the right carrier route is essential for optimizing delivery routes and ensuring prompt, accurate mail distribution.
